The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) mandates that every Food Business Operator (FBO) obtain an FSSAI license to ensure the delivery of high-quality food to consumers. This license is valid for a specified duration, typically ranging from 1 to 5 years. However, renewing this license within its validity period is crucial to legally sustain and adhere to FSSAI regulations.

The FSSAI license renewal process is as significant as obtaining the initial license. FBOs engaged in food-related businesses like processing, manufacturing, packaging, or distributing must prioritize renewal to continue operations lawfully. The renewal process involves submitting an application through the online platform called the Food Licensing and Registration System (FLRS), which streamlines the licensing process.

FLRS, available through five Regional Offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Mumbai, and Kerala, Chennai, facilitates online applications for licenses and entitlements. This system simplifies and centralizes the renewal process, ensuring convenience for FBOs across different regions.

Ultimately, the FSSAI license renewal stands as a pivotal step for food entrepreneurs to maintain compliance with regulatory standards and sustain their food businesses legally and ethically.

Types of FSSAI License Renewal

There are three distinct types of FSSAI License Renewal based on the scale and turnover of the Food Business Operator (FBO):

  1. Basic FSSAI License Renewal:

    • This renewal is applicable for FBOs operating under basic registration with a turnover of less than ₹12 Lakhs.
    • FBOs falling under this category can renew their basic FSSAI license to continue their operations legally.
  2. State FSSAI License Renewal:

    • FBOs with a turnover ranging from ₹12 Lakhs to ₹20 Crore fall under the State FSSAI license category.
    • The renewal fee for State FSSAI License is determined based on the eligibility criteria of the food business and the duration of the license's validity.
  3. Central FSSAI License Renewal:

    • FBOs with a turnover exceeding Rs. 20 Crore are categorized under the Central FSSAI License.
    • It's mandatory for these FBOs to renew their Central FSSAI License before its expiration to maintain compliance and continue their operations legally.

Benefits of the Renewal of FSSAI License

Renewing your food license regularly is crucial for maintaining legal compliance, ensuring consumer trust, and expanding business opportunities. Here are some of the key benefits of renewing your food license:

  1. Compliance with Food Safety Regulations: Maintaining a valid food license demonstrates your commitment to adhering to food safety regulations set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This ensures that your food preparation, storage, and handling practices meet the required standards, minimizing the risk of foodborne illnesses and protecting public health.
  2. Enhanced Brand Reputation and Consumer Trust: A valid food license serves as a symbol of your business's commitment to food safety and quality. It instills confidence among consumers, encouraging them to choose your products and services. A positive reputation for food safety can attract new customers and strengthen customer loyalty.
  3. Expansion into New Markets: A valid food license is often a prerequisite for entering new markets, partnering with retailers, or participating in food exhibitions and events. By renewing your license, you open doors to opportunities for growth and expansion.
  4. Protection from Legal Issues and Penalties: Operating without a valid food license can lead to legal repercussions, including fines, penalties, and even closure of your business. Renewing your license ensures that you are legally compliant and protects you from potential legal hassles.
  5. Access to Financial Benefits: Banks and financial institutions are more likely to provide loans or investments to businesses with a valid food license. This can be crucial for expanding your operations or upgrading your facilities.
  6. Staying Updated on Food Safety Standards: The FSSAI regularly updates food safety regulations to keep pace with advancements in technology and scientific knowledge. Renewing your license ensures that you stay updated on these changes and maintain adherence to the latest standards.
  7. Demonstrating Responsibility and Transparency: A valid food license signals to consumers, partners, and investors that you are a responsible business that takes food safety seriously. This transparency fosters trust and strengthens your brand image.

Consequences of not Filing the Renewal Application of FSSAI License?

  1. Penalties: Failing to renew the FSSAI license within the stipulated period incurs penalties. The penalty charged is typically Rs100 per day of delay.

  2. Expired License: An FSSAI license is considered expired if not renewed on time. Operating with an expired license is illegal and can lead to serious repercussions, including legal actions and business disruptions.

  3. Non-Compliance: Operating without a valid FSSAI license violates regulatory compliance standards, risking the quality of the products and potentially endangering consumer health.

  4. Business Interruption: Running a food business without a valid FSSAI license can lead to disruptions, closure notices, or legal interventions by the authorities, causing significant interruptions to operations.

  5. Financial Loss: Apart from penalties, there might be additional costs associated with legal fees, fines, or efforts required to rectify the non-compliance issues.
