Frequently Asked Questions on FSSAI Seller Registration

Why do I need an FSSAI License?

FSSAI Certificate or License is a mandatory document required for doing any kind of food business, whether it is small scale or large scale. This restriction is laid down in the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006. Under FSSAI, there are three kinds of Licenses - Central FSSAI License, State FSSAI License, and Registration. The criteria are defined in the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Business) Regulations, 2011.

Why does an FBA food seller require an FSSAI License with the Amazon Fulfilment Centre address?

As per FSSAI regulations, every food business operator shall conduct food business from premises under a licence/registration only. Since FBA sellers carry out retail business from Amazon Fulfilment Centres, an FSSAI License is required for its address.

Why should the 'Kind of Business' field in the FSSAI License be Retailer?

As products are ‘Sold by’ the seller from Amazon Fulfilment Centres, it is mandatory to choose the Kind of Business field as ‘Retailer’ in the FSSAI License.

Why should each site have a different FSSAI License with a different number and registration?

FSSAI License is a premises-based license, due to which the seller who is selling on Amazon needs to get separate FSSAI for each Fulfilment Centre (FC), inter or intra state.

What are the requirements on your FSSAI License for selling food products from FC?

  • FSSAI License should be in your name/your company name.
  • The seller's Legal name on seller central should match with the Legal name in your FSSAI License.
  • In the FSSAI License for Fulfilment Centre, the address should be in field number 2, i.e., Address of Business Premises.
  • The Fulfilment Centre address on the license should match with the requested Fulfilment Centre's address on the portal.
  • In the FSSAI License for Fulfilment Centre, the Kind of business field should be ‘Retailer’.
  • FSSAI License should be valid and not expired. The remaining validity of the FSSAI License should be more than 2 months.
  • The License/Registration Number present on the top of the document must be valid when verified with the FSSAI Government Portal.
  • The 'scope' of the License should include all food products and/or food product categories that you intend to sell.

Ensuring Food Safety in eCommerce: A Comprehensive Guide to FSSAI Compliance

Introduction

In the rapidly growing world of eCommerce, ensuring food safety is paramount. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) plays a critical role in safeguarding public health by regulating and supervising food safety. Understanding and adhering to FSSAI guidelines is not just a legal obligation for online businesses but also a cornerstone for building consumer trust and credibility in the competitive market.

Understanding FSSAI and Its Importance for eCommerce

FSSAI, established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, is the authoritative body responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. For eCommerce businesses, FSSAI compliance is crucial. It ensures the products meet safety standards, thereby enhancing consumer trust and business credibility. Adherence to these standards is not just about legal compliance but also about contributing to a healthier society.

FSSAI Registration for eCommerce Businesses

To commence an eCommerce food business in India, obtaining FSSAI registration or license is mandatory. The process involves choosing the right type of license – Basic, State, or Central – depending on business size and type. The necessary documentation generally includes identity and address proofs, kitchen layout plans, food safety management plan, and others. Acquiring this registration is a step towards legal compliance and quality assurance.

FSSAI Regulations and Standards for Online Food Sellers

FSSAI has set specific regulations for online food sellers to ensure the safety and quality of food being sold. These regulations cover aspects from production to packaging and delivery. Adhering to these standards is not only mandatory but also a measure to ensure that food products are safe, wholesome, and of good quality, directly impacting consumer health and safety.

Implementing FSSAI Guidelines in eCommerce Operations

Implementing FSSAI guidelines involves ensuring food safety at every stage – right from sourcing to storage, packaging, and delivery. Utilizing technology for compliance tracking and quality control can significantly aid in maintaining these standards. Learning from successful case studies can provide practical insights into effective implementation strategies.

The Consequences of Non-Compliance

Non-compliance with FSSAI standards can lead to severe legal consequences including penalties and business shutdown. Beyond legal implications, it can also negatively impact brand reputation and consumer trust, which are crucial for business sustainability in the eCommerce domain.

Future of Food Safety in eCommerce

The future of food safety in eCommerce will be shaped by emerging trends like advanced technology for food tracking and quality control, and evolving regulations that respond to new challenges. Staying ahead in compliance involves continuous learning and innovation, ensuring that businesses not only meet current standards but are also prepared for future developments.

Conclusion

Ensuring FSSAI compliance is pivotal for the success of an eCommerce business in the food sector. It's about legal adherence, but more importantly, it's about building a trustworthy brand that consumers can rely on for safe and quality food products.
